GOTCHA! I knew that title would get your attention but this isn't a "tell-all" post, it's more of my Informed Idiot series... titled as such because there are a lot of 3's in this one. In fact, this is my Informed Idiot Lesson #3.

There are 3 levels of elected officials: FEDERAL, state, and local. (Yuck! That reminds me... it's tax season)

There are 3 branches of the FEDERAL level: JUDICIAL, legislative, and executive.

The JUDICIAL system has 3 levels of court: district court (the trial court), circuit court (the first level of appeal), and the Supreme Court (the final level of appeal)

And just to add another "3" in the mix.... it is Article 3 of the Constitution that establishes the Judicial branch.

Federal Judges and Justices at all 3 levels are nominated by the President and confirmed by the Senate but it's Congress that determines the shape and structure of the federal judiciary (like the number of Justices seated on the Supreme Court and the jurisdiction of each court) There are currently 94 district courts, 13 circuit courts, and one Supreme Court.

Federal Judges can only be removed through impeachment by the House of Representatives and conviction in the Senate. Judges and Justices serve no fixed term, they serve until their death, retirement, or conviction by the Senate.
